  1. why can’t grignard reagent 1,2-addition to the carboxylic acid? can i happen with acid catalyst making a good L.G?

    1. Because the carboxylic acid would protonate the Grignard reagent, destroying it. Once deprotonated, the carboxylate is a poorer electrophile. Grignard reagents are generally ineffective in adding to them.
