Formal Charge

The charge assigned to an atom based on the formal charge formula FC = VE – NBE – B, where VE refers to the number of valence electrons in the neutral atom, NBE refers to the number of non-bonding electrons, and B refers to the number of bonds to the atom. It does not account for electronegativity differences between atoms, so it can be an unreliable guide to electron density.
