OsO4

Osmium tetroxide (OsO4) is a reagent for the formation of vicinal diols (1,2-diols) from alkenes. The reaction is concerted and always results in syn addition to the alkene, giving cis diols. It can be used catalytically with a stoichiometric amount of the oxidant NMO (N-methylmorpholine N-oxide).
