Nucleophilic substitution, unimolecular. A substitution reaction where the rate-determining step is loss of a leaving group to give a carbocation, followed by fast attack of a nucleophile. Most favorable with tertiary and allylic alkyl halides which can form reasonably stable carbocations. Often accompanied by the E1 reaction.
